On Location

Being On Location is where your pictures are born. Its Show Time, and its live ! You may only get one shot and you know it and that brings on the pressure.
And all too often that mostly costs mistakes and lost opportunities. This photo was made while I was shooting a Ultralight aircraft buzzing over me for a famous TV Show promotion. I only had one chance to get it right.  I was standing in water, will the spray ruin the shot. FSTOP, focus,  my heart was racing with doubt…CUT…CUT…CUT…! I am the “fracking” director here, knock off the fear and go with your instinct Luke Skywalker…..fortunately it came off perfect and I did not have to fire myself !

I am remembering standing in front of a very large grizzly bear that was coming towards me. I almost always use a tripod, and I knew I was going to have to move. I was zoomed in pretty tight and I was not sure exactly how close to me the bear was, as I was focusing my attention thru the camera lense.
I was relaxed and focused on getting the best shots, until the bear did not fit in the zoomed picture. I looked up and saw it was way time to move, I picked up my tripod and slowly moved out of the bears way. At 400 pounds, and hungry it could have outrun me and eaten me regardless of my actions, so I chose to respect his space, moving slowly, always facing him and NOT BEING SCARED.
Fear, pressure and panic always produce undesired results…. and changing my underwear could always be done later !
When your on location, remember to be aware, and control your fear and stress.. let it go so your creative sub-conscious genius can go to work. (And Never stand in front of a bear !  I used spotters and we are all connected with radios, outfitted with bear spray, water, gps, and a pinch of luck !)
